2017-2018 Class Schedule, Workshops and Dances

Ladies and Gentlemen

(Note: Online registration buttons are at the bottom of this announcement)

We are happy to share with you the UCBDC dance class schedule for next year 2017-2018.

You can see the new schedule by following this link or by

You can also download the registration form.  Please fill it out and bring to the first class along with the Paypal receipt (if you have registered online).  Please arrive 15 minutes early for the first class and forms will be available at the front desk.

The new schedule was designed to have something for everyone. Our goal was to present a program that encourages learning and retention in a comfortable environment.

Research indicates that most dance students could not absorb instructions effectively after around 35-40 minutes. We have designed our classes with this in mind. Here are the highlights:

  • Lessons will be one hour long and will consist of one dance. There will be time to learn, and most importantly, to practice with the help of instructors and teaching assistants. See Schedule here

  • The regular Social classes will teach only the core dances (Waltz, Foxtrot, Rumba, Cha Cha, East Coast Swing). This will allow members to focus and retain more of those dances. Each dance will span 5 weeks. See link

  • The classes will run in 5 week sessions and registration will be required for each 5 week session. This will allow a higher level of freedom for all to match their individual schedule and preferences.

  • West Coast Swing was added (as a single 5 week session) to the country syllabus. The dedicated West Coast Swing class remains as before.

  • Club Latin Dances class will be added to focus on Salsa, Bachata, and the like.

  • Workshops will be (almost always) taught by a Professional and will cover dances that are not in the core syllabus and will be taught at a beginner as well as intermediate levels. The workshops are an excellent value as each workshop will total 4.5 hours. See Workshop Schedule here.

  • Friday Night dance workshops and practices will present variations to the dances presented in the regular Social and International classes as well as some line dances and other specialty dances.

  • For those who may dislike repeated registrations, we will be allowing members to register for several classes and terms at the same time and on the same form.

  • We are presenting incentives to those who are able to register online for level 1 classes prior to 2 September 2017. See the Incentives section at the end.

  • We will have four levels of Social classes (1, 2, 3 and 4). This would allow a better design of the syllabus and give students a wider range of classes to match their abilities. Please see the Appropriate Skills Policy.

  • The Appropriate Skills Policy has more details so our members could better evaluate their skills and decide if they are ready to move up in levels. The policy requires AUDITIONS (run by our Professional), for students wishing to move to a higher level. Those who would want to stay at the same level, as the one they attended in 2016-2017, will not need to audition. Please refer to the Appropriate Skills Policy.

  • Country and Argentine Tango will each have a level 1 and 2.

  • International Technique will be introduced to focus on the technique needed to execute patterns properly for the specific dance of that 5 week session. The technique class would be a good starting point for those who have completed social level 3 if they wish to join the international program.

  • There will NOT BE any free first night of classes in level 1.

Finally, the TA Boot Camp will run in August where those who wish to become TAs (please see the TAs and Instructors manual) will learn the proper technique for the basic patterns that the UCBDC will be teaching. Auditions will be carried out at the end of the Boot Camp for those who want to be considered for TA duties.

The TA Boot Camp is the most efficient and most affordable means of improving the skill level of any dancer. The UCBDC has always welcomed members who register at the TA Boot Camp, to improve their skills, whether they wish to be TAs or not.

Our Professional will be teaching all classes at the TA Boot Camp and will be emphasizing the aspects of technique, frame, connection and movement. These are the same requirements that need to be demonstrated in the AUDITIONS (to move up a level). Members who are planning to move up a level, may want to consider attending the TA Boot Camp as a refresher and an improvement tool before the Audition.

We look forward to all of you joining us next year. Please invite your friends and family to join us. Social dancing in our club is a fun, safe, and active way of staying healthy, making friends, and adding more options to one’s social life. Help us share this with your friends and family
